The Great Sphinx
The Great Sphinx guarded the pyramids.
A 36 meter high figure, with the body of a lion and head of Chefren (a ruler), it sat with great majesty for centuries, only to be damaged by vandals and the Sahara's sandblasting winds.
The lion signified the sun god and so emphasised the King's role as son of Re, the Sun God.
The lion's strength also suggests the monarch's great power.
