There were two different types of pyramids, the step pyramid and the sloping pyramid. Step pyramids were supposed to represent a gigantic stairway for the king to climb to join the sun god in the sky. The form of the sloping pyramid was intended to recreate the mound that had emerged out of the watery ground at the beginning of time. Later pyramids contained inscriptions of spells to help the Pharaoh in the afterlife. [MH] {NR}
