INDEX NEXT UP LAST ATG Pierre Corneille Pierre Corneille

Albert Finney in Macbeth Pierre Corneille was a great French playwright during the 17th Century. He was born in Rouen, France June 6, 1606 and died in Paris October 1, 1684. Corneille was educated in Rouen and began writing plays in the late 1620s. "Melite" was first performed in 1629 and was a great success. He wrote 6 other comedies enjoyed so much by Richelieu that he appointed Corneille in the "Society of the Five Authors", an elite group of the five best authors of the time. Corneille found it difficult to write within the style limitations which were to be followed by the group. In 1637, he produced "Le Cid" which is said to be his greatest work. But "Le Cid" was found to be morally unacceptable by the government and was not allowed to be performed in public. After three years of writing nothing, Corneille produced three tragedies; "Horace" (1640), "Cinna" (1641) and "Polyeucte" (1643). The actor in this photograph is Albert Finney. [AL] {EB}
