Inventing a style of music by combining popular Jazz with traditional technique, George wrote his most famous Rhapsody in Blue (1924).
Four years later he wrote An American in Paris.
He wrote a large amount for light theatres, and became very popular with the public.
When he died in 1937 he was in performance at an open-air Memorial Concert in New York when he suddenly died in front of 20,000 of his fans.
