Jazz is an American Negro type of dancing music, which uses heavily a rhythm pattern called "Syncopation". Jazz originated in the southern states, and uses various percussion instruments to carry the grove. Wind instruments are used for the melody most prominent the saxophone with a hard loud tone. Under the name Ragtime, Jazz music began to gather popularity in 1911 and soon spread to the rest of the world, much to the dismay of classical music buffs who desperately clung to their disappearing concerto! Later the terms Jazz and Swing came into use and people who love Jazz and study it can tell the difference between the three terms. Straight Jazz is Jazz that is played as the composer wrote it, and Hot Jazz is the style when the performer adds his own invention to the music by Improvisation. [AW] {JO}
