Masaccio (1401-1428)
Masaccio created a realistic setting in the painting The Tribute Money through the use of atmospheric perspective and a consistent light source.
The consistent light source is used as never before, it seems to come from the right of the painting and creates realistic cast shadows on the ground.
This light painted on the fresco appears to come from an existing window from inside the chapel.
On the landscape the colour intensity is lessened and tinted with blue to create atmospheric perspective.
Masaccio was only twenty-seven years old when he died, he revolutionised the art of painting.
This is "Raising of the Son of Theophilus of Antioch" from 1427.
