Mixing colour pigment with polymer emulsions, which allows the paint to be applied to most surfaces, makes acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is considered to be less influenced by the heat and other destructive forces than oil paint is. Because of its desirable characteristics, it became immediately popular with artists when they were first commercially promoted in the 1960s. [RA] {EB}
Acrylics dry quickly and are thinned with water to make washes, similar to watercolours, or can be applied heavily like oils. Acrylic paint has only been used in the last half of the 20th Century. [MH] {NR}
