A self portrait is a work of art that is a depiction of the artist. Some examples of artists who painted self portraits include Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, and Albrecht Durer. Many artists try their skill at self-portraiture. It is particularly helpful when trying out a new technique or style without having the expense of paying for a model to pose. [MH] {NR}
The self-portrait is the finest opportunity for an artist to make a flattering statement or the most penetrating revelation of character of which he or she is capable. Since the 6th century BC, artists have often portrayed themselves with the identifying attributes of their profession such as palette, brush, and easel.
