Donatello
Donatello's David clearly shows the use of natural and telling poses. David stands in the contrapposto
pose, weight on one leg with other knee bent. The youth's relaxed left foot toys with the severed
head of Goliath. The facial expressions show the determination and self-sufficiency of the Renaissance.
It is the pose which shows the peaceful and eloquent nature of the boy. Instead of being idealised and
his body hidden under shapeless clothing David also shows naturalism through his realistic slender
nude body. His figures seem capable of movement and can easily be removed from their locations to
stand on their own.
