Early Christian churches used mosaics made of coloured glass and even gold. Ancient Romans created wall murals using thousands of pieces of marble polished as smooth as glass.

The Romans mosaics brought glasswork to new levels of beauty and outshone any previous phase of civilization.
The Byzantines created mosaics that showed flat, symmetrical, erect figures in full face. Common scenes were of God the Creator, the Virgin and Child, and the mighty Saints. Their mosaics were placed upon great domes.
