COMPUTERIZED LOOM

Weaving looms and computer technology share an interesting history. Many credit the Jacquard loom of the last century as being the first computer. The Jacquard loom is a very complicated machine. Long sequences of punch cards are used to manipulate pattern threads producing intricately patterned cloth.

Modern hand and industrial weavers have been freed from many of the labour-intensive tasks of cloth construction through the use of computers. Software programs have been developed to make weaving drafts very easy to produce. Looms connected to a computer through a Compu-Dobby interface makes weaving a simple process. The picture shows a modern computerized multi-harness loom. Many intricate and complicated fabric designs can be woven with ease on this loom. [SB] {SB}
