An asteroid is a body that orbits the sun. Many asteroids are no larger than a few
kilometers, and most asteroids are irregularly shaped, unlike the circular major planets.
Though most asteroids are in the astroid belt located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, many other asteroids come
very close to earth.
The first asteroid was discovered on January 1st, 1801. At first, it was thought to be
a planet and it was named Ceres. Within a few years more asteroids were discovered, and
scientists realized that they were dealing with several little planets.
