Asteroids

Asteroids are smaller bodies that orbit the sun. Many Asteroids are no larger than a few kilometers. Most Asteroids are irregularly shaped unlike the more spherical Planets. Although Asteroids appear to originate from the Asteroid Belt located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, some Asteroids come very close to earth. The first Asteroid was discovered on January 1st, 1801. At first, it was thought to be a Planet and it was named Ceres. Within a few years more Asteroids were discovered and scientists realized that they were dealing with several little planets. [VH] {SR} {EP}
