Italy
During 1921 riots were common in Italy because
many people were against the new social reforms
which were beginning to take effect. Behind
most of these was a very violent group, called Fascisti.
Their leader was Benito Mussolini.
Anyone who disagreed with their politics and tried to tell them
about it was beaten or
murdered. In 1922 the Fascisti marched on Rome and Mussolini took over from
the Italian
King. Mussolini controlled the police and armed forces. Anyone who spoke or wrote out
against the government was punished. Mussolini continued to rule in this manner until 1943
when
Italy surrendered. This photograph captures the Canadian military in war-torn Italy in
1943.
