Monarchy
This portrait features Queen Juliana
Marie of Denmark. When a country or state is ruled by a single person or sovereign, it is
said to be a monarchy. This
head of state inherits his or her position for life. With the
influx of Christianity, monarchs were
said to have had a divine right to govern. The monarch
does not usually force his rule upon his
subjects. Instead the citizens support the divine
mandate of the king or queen.
