Russian

Russian is the mother tongue of an estimated 250 to 300 million people worldwide. The former USSR had Russian as its national language. However, in a census taken in 1979, only 59% of the USSR population claimed it as their mother tongue. There are many people living outside of the former USSR, especially in Eastern Europe who primarily speak Russian. This Russian souvenir stand is outside St. Petersburg. [BM] {VA}
