During the 12th and 13th centuries Denmark continued to expand its territory, adding other territories such as Iceland, Sweden and Finland. By the 20th century all the claimed territories were granted independence and Denmark became half the size that it once was. Surrounded by a moat is the Rosenborg Palace in Copenhagen, Denmark.
