Medieval Equatorial Guinea
In 1473,
Bioko, one of the islands of Equatorial Guinea was discovered by
Portuguese explorer
Fernando Po. Portugal controlled the area that is now
Equatorial Guinea until 1778 when the
territory was ceded to Spain.
The Spanish slowly developed a cocoa plantation system relying
heavily on
Nigerian workers.
