In 1492 Christopher Columbus renamed the Haitian island of Arawak, Hispaniola. The next century saw the complete annihilation of the Arawaks. These native inhabitants died in slavery, fell to disease and were murdered. The western half of the island was continually attacked by pirates and ceded to France in 1697. [BM] {UA}
