In the 8th century Pepin the Short, father of Charlemagne, donated the secular state which is now the Holy See to the pope. The secular state donated to the pope is a remnant of the "Patrimony of St. Peter". The Holy See is the smallest sovereign state in the world. This view overlooks the square in front of St. Peter's.
