Medieval Iraq

By the 7th century AD the Mesopotamian region was incorporated into the Islamic world. In 1258 the Mongol's destroyed the irrigation works of one of the major city centers causing the decline of this region. In 1534 the Ottoman empire seized control of the region and Iraq became a province of this empire until the 20th century. This shrine of the 7th and 9th Imams, or Muslim religious leaders, is found in Baghdad. [BM] {UA}
