Medieval Italy
During the medieval period
powerful city-states including the maritime cities of Venice & Genoa emerged. Prominent
cities of
agriculture & commerce included Florence & Siena. The wealth & development of
Italy brought forth the renaissances
of the 12th & 15th centuries. The Habsburg empire in
northern Europe looked upon Italy with desiring eyes.
During the 19th century France, under
Napolean, briefly controlled Italy, only
to be turned over to the Austrians who dominated
the north.
