Bantu peoples have inhabited the rich, fertile land of Mozambique since prehistory. During the 16th century the Portuguese established trading posts along the coast. Mozambique provided a wealth of gold & ivory. In 1885 Mozambique became a colony of Portugual. Portugual retained control of Mozambique until 1974.
