Medieval Netherland Antilles
The Netherland
Antilles is composed of 5 islands in the Caribbean Sea. In 1499 the first of these islands,
Curacao,
was discovered by Spainish explorer Alonzo de Ojeda. In 1527 Spain took control of
Curacao & the neighbouring
islands of Bonaire & Aruba. These islands were inhabited by
peaceful Arawak indians. The northern islands which
complete the Netherland Antilles were
inhabited by fierce Carib indians. These islands were first sighted by
Columbus in 1493.
