Medieval Oman

Before the 18th century Oman was dominated by Persia. From 1508 to 1659 Portuguese explorers claimed the primary port of Muscat. In 1659 the Ottoman Empire took possession of this prominent port. In turn the Turkish were driven out of Muscat in 1741 by Ahmed ibn Said of Yemen. In 1744 Ahmed ibn Said consolidated the sultanate of Oman and founded the royal line which continues to this day.
