During the 6th century AD the ancient Veddah inhabitants on the island of Sri Lanka were conquered by Sinhalese from northern India. Sri Lanka was a well known island along the trans-Indian trade route, growing in prosperity as spices & precious stones gained value. On several occasions India tried to capture this wealthy island positioned just off their eastern coast. These invasions led to the establishment of a Tamil community on the island. [BM] {UA}
