Living is difficult in Turkmenistan as 90% of the country is covered by the Kara Kum desert & mountainous regions prone to earthquakes are located in the south. Turkmenistan has been inhabited by Iranian-speaking people for many centuries. The Turkmen became a distinct ethnic group by the 15th century. However, the Persians & the Uzbek khanates ruled.
