Medieval Yemen
In ancient times Yemen was
known as Sheba or Saba. Beginning in Biblical times, Yemen controlled much of the
caravan
trade in gold & spices from Africa & India to the Middle East. In the 7th century, with the
spread of
Islam, Yemen was incorporated into Arabia. As a result of Arabian control, Yemen
experienced 3 centuries or unrest
until a line of Yemeni kings, who were also imams of the
Zaidi sect of Islam, came into power in the 10th century.
