During the 19th century France intervened on behalf of the Christian community in Lebanon. Warfare between the Marionites & Druze led to the massacre of many Christians. Through the efforts of France the Ottoman Empire granted the Marionites some local autonomy. All of Lebanon received independence in 1944.
