In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi granted the Maori's possession of their lands. Sadly, the next 30 years were marked by violence, leaving the Maori's displaced from their lands. The loss of life through warfare & the introduction of disease greatly depleted the number of Maori. In 1890 there were only 40,000 Maori. [BM] {UA}
