Portugal has a long tradition of seafaring. Through Portuguese exploration a world empire was established in the 15th & 16th centuries. At the height of the Portuguese empire Portugal controlled the west coast of Africa, the shores of the Indian Ocean, parts of southern Asia & Brazil. During the 19th century civil war erupted in Portugal & Brazil declared independence. Portugal experienced a rapid decline. [BM] {UA}
