The native peoples of Sierra Leone rebelled against the British & the new Creole elite. The natives felt bitter towards the favour shown to the English speaking descendents of the ex-slaves. Throughout the early 20th century greater independence was established & by 1971 the last ties were cut with the British Crown. On April 27, 1971 Sierra Leone became a republic. [BM] {UA}
