Modern Sudan

In 1956 Sudan became fully independent from Great Britain & Egypt. In 1958 a coup led to the rule of Gen. Abboud. Riots led to his resignation in 1964. In 1969 another military coup led to the socialist rule of Gen. Nimeir. Tension rose between Marxists & non-Marxists, & between black southerners & arab northerners. This unrest led to the granting of local autonomy of Sudan's 3 black southern provinces.In 1976 another attempted coup led to the execution of many prominent citizens. [BM] {UA}
