Modern Tunisia

Tunisia was occupied by the Ottoman empire in 1574. Ottoman rule continued until the 19th century. In 1881 Tunisia became a a French protectorate. Early in the 20th century a Nationalist movement began in Tunisia. Unrest continued until the 1950's when France granted self-rule. By 1956 Tunisia gained full independence. Many French returned to France when Tunisia reached full independence. [BM] {UA}
