In 1919, a Monarchy was established by Amanullah Khan who proclaimed himself King. The independence of Afghanistan ended with a military coup in 1978 which brought pro-Soviet leftists to power. In 1979, Soviet troops invaded to put down widespread revolts. Soviet troops then occupied Afghanistan in support of Babrak Karmal's Marxist regime. The Mujaheddin began a guerrilla war against the Soviet forces. In 1986AD, Sayid Mohammad Najibullah replaced Marxist president Babrak Karmal in Afghanistan. In 1988, the Geneva Accords set the timetable for Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Soviet Union began withdrawing its troops, completing the withdrawal in February, 1989.
