In 1971, the Bengali Awami League gained control of Pakistan's National Assembly. Due to delays in seating of the assembly, riots broke out in East Pakistan. On May 26, 1971, East Pakistan declared its independence as Bangladesh. Today it is one of the world's poorest countries, plagued with overpopulation & frequent flooding, with 500,000 dead in 1975 & 130,000 in 1981. [BA] {UA}
