Recent Burundi

The government was overthrown several times until 1987 when Maj. Pierre Buyoya came to power & planned to seek ethnic reconciliation between Hutu & Tutsi. However, in the next election Buyoya was overthrown by Melchoir Ndadaye of the Hutu. The ethnic violence returned & the Tutsi military took control over the government & assassinated Ndadaye. The military continued on killing more than 100,000 civilians, as well as the next president, also a Hutu. The violence continues today. [BA] {UA}
