In 1930 the Dominican Republic fell under a dictatorship for more than 31 years until the assassination of the dictator. This caused great political tension and revolts to which the US responded by invading the island in 1965-66. Reformist party member, Joaquin Balaguer Riardo has been president from 1966 to 1978 and again from 1986 to the present. [BM] {UA}
