Since 1986 democratic rule has dominated. However, there is still a strong military presence. Since the 1960's more than 100,000 people have lost their lives in anti-government guerilla warfare. The guerilla group known as the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Union reached an agreement with the government in 1994 to end more than 30 years of civil war. [BM] {UA}
