Recent Haiti

From 1957 to 1986 Haiti came under the control of authoritarian leaders. Many wealthy and educated Haitians fled the country during this rule, leaving the country poor and uneducated. In 1990 the Rev. Aristide was elected as president in Haiti's first democratic elections. Before the year was out he fled to the US after his government was overthrown in a military coup. Foreign aid was cut off and Haiti's condition continues to worsen. Many refugees have fled to the US. [BM] {UA}
