A National Covenant was formed in 1943 which determined that the President of Lebanon would always be a Marionite Christian, while the Prime Minister would be a Sunni Muslim. Under this covenant Lebanon had great success as a nation. By the late 1970's, however, the majority of Lebanese were Muslim & opposed to the control granted to the Christians through the covenant.
