In 1960 Mali became an independent republic. Since the 1960's Mali has experienced political unrest. Multiparty elections were held in 1992. The Alliance for Democracy, led by president Alpha Konare won with a sweeping majority. This government led by Konare has settled ethnic tensions within Mali & is presently involved with economic reform. Mali remains economically dependent on France for assistance. [BM] {UA}
