Life in Paraguay changed drastically as a result of the War of the Triple Alliance (Brazil, Argentina & Uruguay). At the end of the war in 1870 almost the entire male population had been killed, land had been lost & the country had an enormous debt. After the war the Liberal & Colorado parties developed & have struggled for power ever since. The Liberals held power from 1904-1936, & the Colorados from 1954-1989.
