Gorbachev introduced glasnost (openness) which dismantled censorship. He also introduced perestoika (restructuring) in hopes of redeeming the broken economy & morale of the population. In 1990 president Boris Yeltsin resigned from the Communist party & in 1991 Yeltsin & Gorbachev agreed that the USSR would cease to exist in 1992. The release from communism has been hard won.
