After violent clashes with the Portuguese, residents of São Tomé & Príncipe formed the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé & Príncipe (MLSTP). The islands finally gained independence in 1975. The MLSTP became the only official party on the islands. However, multiparty elections have been introduced. This African nation remains heavily dependent on foreign aid. [BM] {UA}
