Since independence Tunisia has been controlled by a government with a Socialist agenda. Labour strife & unrest continued to grow through the 1980's until 1987 when the president for life was overthrown, replaced by Ben Ali. Tunisia began a program of political & economic restructuring. The strong Tunisian economy & political stablity has in recent years been threatened by radical Muslim groups within Tunisia & from Algeria. [BM] {UA}
