During the 1950's Uruguays economy began to weaken. Life in Uruguay continued to deteriorate reaching an abyss in 1973 when the military took control of the country to fight guerilla warfare. Through Uruguayan military rule the people have suffered grotesque human rights abuses. In 1984 Sanguinetti, from the Colorado party, won a civilian presidential election. He has done much to improve the Uruguay economy & attract foreign investment. [BM] {UA}
