Vikings
In the year 789AD, Vikings began their first raids on England. What prompted their wild
frenzy of war and plunder? Tales of these ferocious fighters, that went into berserk
rages in battle, were even greater than their Barbarian ancestors. One theory is that
Scandinavia, the Viking homeland, began to become overpopulated to the point where
Vikings needed to look elsewhere for riches and food. The first places to be attacked and
looted were remote monasteries. The Vikings probably returned home laden with treasure
boasting about all the treasure overseas that was not only ripe for the taking but also
unguarded. Vikings began as raiders but eventually became settlers and conquerors. There
were three groups of Vikings: Norwegian, Swedish and Danish.
