Marine Life
Just as plants are the ultimate source of energy for all land animals
so are they the source for life in the seas.
In 1887, Victor Hensen, a German professor of zoology, divided sea life into three groups:
1. Marine Life: minute, free-floating marine organisms such as diatoms
2. Nekton: free-swimming marine animals such as fish
3. Benthos: plants and animals on the sea floor such as coral and crabs
