Copper
Copper is a native element that has been a resource of significant historical importance. Today it
is mostly used in the production of electric cables and wires, as it is an excellent conductor of
electricity and heat. Copper often has a red colour on a fresh surface but is more frequently found
with a green or black film. This very rare mineral is heavy and so soft that it can easily be formed
into different shapes. The name copper arises from the Greek word "Kyprios" which is the name
of the island Cyprus. It is here that copper was found quite early and mined. Some of the finest
native copper crystals have come from Lake Superior, USA. Fine crystals have also come from
Germany, Sweden, Chile and Italy.
