Selenite
Selenite is commonly known as gypsum (hydrous calcium sulphate). The name gypsum comes
from the Greek word "gypsos" meaning plaster. Gypsum is still used for making cement and
plaster. Selenite also has its root in the Greek language. The transparent, colourless quality of this
variety of stone inspired the name "selenite" or "moon stone". Gypsum is a very common mineral
found in abundance in parts of western Europe, Russia, and North America.
